The American Boy is an enthralling tale that takes place in 19th century London. Thomas Shield is a schoolmaster, who, in the course of his duties, meets two young boys: Charles Frant and Edgar Allan. Through these boys, Mr. Shields is introduced to London's high society and in particular, two wealthy banking families: the Frants and Carswells. Shield is immediately attracted to the striking Mrs. Frant and Miss Carswell. But two murders propel the story forward to its unexpected, terrifying conclusion.
Chosen for the Richard and Judy bookclub 2005.

Took this book on holiday as one we could all read. Despite its size, it's a quick read as the chapters are short and the story is pacey. the descriptions of Regency London are well drawn and I enjoyed the twists in the plot. My only minor criticism would be the appendix section that finishes the story seemed a bit tacked on.
I'd thoroughly recommend this.

A beautifully written story set in Regency England. Andrew Taylor has the period described to a 't' and with plenty of twists the plot is gripping to the end. The device of giving a role to a real life character, Edgar Allen Poe, works well and adds to the plausability of the whole book.
