Journal Entry 1 by lucygirl from Wodonga, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, April 1, 2003
I loved this book - & the books within it. I have copied some of Shirkahr's journal entry below (with permission & cause it was so good):
--------------------------------------
From the Author of the hit comedy movie "The First Wives Club" (1996) comes her fourth book, "The BestSeller". This novel is a scathing and hilarious look at the cut-throat world of Book Publishing.

Goldsmith takes you through the entire process of submitting a manuscript, getting an agent and a contract with a publisher, having it edited, getting it submitted for publishing, finding out how much the advance and/or royalties will be, having the book reviewed, and then the watching and waiting till the book is released.
Will it soar or will it crash?

Goldsmith is also into the name dropping, with incidental references to actual persons. These names are used to "lend the fiction a realistic setting." There are also numerous quotes sprinkled throughout the book. They range from publishers, to writers and editors alike.

I found the characters are very realistic, and I found myself getting emotional for them in bad times, and cheering for them when something good happened.

MY OPINIONS OF THE BOOKS WITHIN THE BOOK:
*

Susann Baker Edmonds - Mills & Boon type stuff - would not have even picked it up!
Jude Daniels - I would have read this one - & probably would have have enjoyed. I think I would prefer Judith's version to Daniel's though.
Terry O'Neal - It's sad that I will never get the opportunity to read this one!
Camilla Clapfish - would have enjoyed reading this on rainy afternoon.
G.O.Ds - nah.
***
This book has also changed the way I look at book signings (with all my wordly experience - I have been to 2 :+)) This is a book that I have read, re-read & re-read again & will continue to do so - so this one is not up for trade. Sorry...

Davis & Dash is a big-time publishing house in New York, where power and prestige are the name of the game. The pressure is on to find the potential bestselling novels for the new autumn list, and the competition is fierce.
Behind the books are the people who can make or break them: Gerald Ochs Davis - G.O.D. - who runs the show, or thinks he does; Pam "Preying" Mantiss, the editor-in-chief - who spots the talent, then devours it; the agents, all hustling to make deals; and the booksellers, who must be persuaded to sell the novels to the reading public; preferably in vast quantities. This year, Davis & Dash are counting on a winner.
Will it be Susann Baker Edmonds, whose blockbusters read the top many years ago - too many perhaps? Or will it be Jude Daniels, the pseudonym of a husband and wife team? She did all the work, while he takes all the credit. Terry O'Neal's brilliant though uncommon first novel finds a place on the list - after 23 rejections. Tragically, she will never know. Meanwhile, a chance encounter in Tuscany leads Camilla Clapfish, a young English writer, to Davis & Dash - will her little book be worth the risk? And last, but not least, there is G.O.D. himself, whose latest roman a clef will haev to be the sensation he claims it is in order to earn back its million dollar advance.
Who knows what it takes to create a bestseller? As they race for the top, the authors make some important discoverires - about the unpredictable business of books and the precarious fortunes of publishers, but above all about themselves.
