Amazon Besprechung der Redaktion

An evocative literary thriller set in a remote Welsh village. Thirty years ago, in a remote Welsh village, Iffy, Bessie, Fatty and Billy formed a remarkable friendship and enjoyed an impoverished yet magical childhood. That winter they found a skull with its front teeth missing, that summer they experienced a plague of frogs, crept into a garden full of strange statutes, and discovered just what mad Carty Annie had been collecting so secretly in those jars of hers. But at the end of that long, hot summer of 1963, one of them disappeared...Over thirty years later, retired detective Will Sloane, is compelled to return to that strange Welsh town of secrets and lunatics to try to solve the case of the missing child. But before he can finally discover the truth about what happened, he finds himself involved in a number of interlocking mysteries.

On this dark, dull, rainy day came a little light into my life with the arrival of this book. I was looking out of my front door just when the wet and bedraggled postman walked towards me with a wettish-looking package! (That reminds me that I have an Ernest Hemmingway book to give to my postman, because he told me he likes that author. I must get around to labelling it, and giving it to him!). Thank you ghanescha, for brightening this day for me, by sending me this book. I wish I could start reading it straight away, but I'm already reading two books right now, with another two at the top of the pile that I have to read as soon as possible. However, I will get around to it in the end.

Out of the three journallers, so far, for this book, it looks like I am the first one to read it, and what a good read it was! I loved it! The story is about four children who befriended each other: Iffy, Fatty, Billy and Bessie. Billy couldn't talk since the accidental death of his brother. Bessie would cover her ears if she heard someone swearing. Iffy had an overactive imagination and was afraid of many things and often wet her pants with fear! Fatty was intelligent, imaginative, spontaneous, enthusiastic and caring. I particularly liked Iffy and Fatty. Iffy said things just as she heard them, like the time when she prayed to all the saints she could remember like 'Francis the Cissy' and 'Joan of Fark', and she also said that Mrs. Bunting had 'die-or-beat-us', so she couldn't have sugar or sweets!
Fatty lived in the worst home out of the four of them, with a drunk mother and an abusive drunk father. It seems that other people fed him most of the time, like Iffy's grandmother used to give him slices of toast. At the end of the summer of 1963 one child was missing!
The story jumps from the story of the children, to a time that was over 30 years later when a retired detective returned to the village and looked into the case of the missing child again. It is not at all confusing because there is a different text size for each time zone. So you know when you are changing from one time to the next and back again. All in all, a very nice story!

I believe I have to send this book on to Miss Markey in England. I will do this as soon as I can get the money to post it, or I have a friend who is going to England in February and I will ask her to post it for me from there. It will cost less than one third of the postage price that it would cost me from The Netherlands. It is no wonder that the postmen in this country carry very little bags. No one wants to pay the high postage costs they charge here!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I contacted MissMarkey, but she decided not to read this book after all and asked me just to send it to keeta1. The book is quite heavy and the postage from here to New Zealand would have cost a lot of money, which right now I just cannot afford. However, I have a friend who is travelling to the UK soon, and she will post it to New Zealand from the UK. It will cost less one third of the cost of the Dutch service!

So, today at church I gave it to my friend along with the postage cost in UK money, (I had some left over from the last holiday). My friend said she will definitely post this from the UK. So it will be a nice surprise for keeta1 when it does turn up in her mail box!

keeta1 I really hope you will enjoy this story as much as I did!

What a nice surprise I got when I returned home this afternoon to find this book in my postbox!
Thank you so much chamonix44 for going to so much trouble to post it on to me. It's had a very long journey, but was so well wrapped that it arrived without a hair out of place! Thanks also to ghanescha for making it into a ray. Happy Easter to you both.
I look forward to reading it quite soon.

A really enjoyable story! I wasn't too sure when I started it, if I'd like it very much, but it soon grabs hold and doesn't let go. Keeps you guessing until the end, although I don't know if it shows Wales in the best light.....makes it sound awfully dark and gloomy!
