First book in the "Regeneration" trilogy. Set in a military hospital in Scotland in 1917 where shell-shocked officers are sent to recuperate and where Doctor W.H.Rivers, an army psychologist, helps them to come to terms with the horrors they have experienced. The war poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen are among his patients...
I first came across this as a superb film with Jonathan Pryce as Rivers, so when I saw all three books together in the bookshop, I just couldn't resist.

In terms of literature technically a good book.
Personally I missed a good story which kept me on reading.
I missed inspiration within the book; it was too much psychiatry and the main character didn't come to live.
In terms of historiography: the main message of the book is nowadays fully accepted.

Irenne's husband: mainly the same view as Irenne herself. No gripping story; the novel contains little coherence.
Left in Parador Hotel, Nerja, Spain, together with "The Eye in the Storm". Part III of the trilogy was never in our possession. Left in this more prestigious hotel, in the middle of the English upmarketed community of Nerja, in the hope to find a good public for them.
