I was curious to see how a British author would describe and characterize the Alentejo and its people. In this particular, I found that Monica Ali did quite well; Portuguese and foreigners alike, they all sound true.
Alas, there are too many characters in the novel and we do not get to know them deeply enough; it all remains in the surface.
