It took me a while to get into this book and, at the beginning, I was seriously doubting whether I would enjoy it. But Welsh soon draws the reader into the intrigue surrounding the court and Privy Council in tudor London, and particularly into the mystery surrounding the last days and death of Christopher Marlowe. The writing is precise, almost elegant at times, and the characterisation full if a little stereotypical, particularly for Marlowe himself, sadly. But I ended up really enjoying this slim little novel, even if I didn't find the interpretation of the facts surrounding Marlowe's death especially convincing.
