Samuel Johnson had a significant impact in the 18th century. This is a relatively short novel about a prince that is effectively imprisoned in "happy valley" along with the emperor's other sons and daughters to protect them from the vicissitudes of life. The price grows weary of the place and escapes along with his sister and a poet.
The story involves their search for happiness and the type of life that they should lead. They explore the lives of the rich and powerful, the poor, scientists, farmers, and many other life styles. There is much philosophical discussion that I found interesting, but I'm not sure that this style of writing would appeal to most modern readers. Subjects that were explored included whether it is better to be married or single, rich or poor, powerful or a subject, educated or ignorant.
I would recommend this book to those interested in philosophy and what was in the 18th century one of the most popular of books.

I am moving to China - hence why not a lot of time to read recently.
This book will be in a box being picked up tomorrow, and hopefully I will see it again in about 3 months time on the other side of the world.

This book has survived its ocean voyage in a container ship from the UK and has successfully met up with me here in China - much sooner than expected. Now it will be sitting in its new home waiting to be read. Starting a new life and job in China means I am not getting much time to read at the moment, but it will not be forgotten.
