Despite the image of NZ many people have, the UN rate as very poor for raising children in a safe environment.
I'm going to Los Vegas for the weekend, and while there I plan to explore the USA postal system and send this book to fellow bookcrosser Bookczuk.
Edited: 30 Jan 2012...well, I didn't find a post office so sent this book via the UPS store in the hotel I was staying at. It would have probably been cheaper to send the book from the UK, but live and learn. I hope the book enjoys its journey through the American delivery system and safely arrives at the other end.
But, the day got a little brighter, because the UPS guy bounded up the stairs to the house and delivered this book. Thank you so much. Sorry you couldn't find a post office. They probably don't have any in Las Vegas -- just places people can wire money to you when you lose your shirt at the casinos. I hate to tell you how cheap it would have been to send the book media mail, but this way the book travelled first class.
Looking forward to reading this after I get through some reading obligations. (Sending hugs and hellos to both previous readers of this book. Two of my favorite BookCrossers.)
As to the book itself, what a powerful story! Not an easy book to read, but it did give me a wider glimpse into the unique elements of New Zealand and its people. the details have blurred over time, but it's one of those books you don't forget. I could kick myself for not journalling sooner, when it was fresh in my mind, especially since it was a RABCK.
BUT
A long time BookCrossing friend is in Charleston because of the eclipse, and it seems a shame to wild release a book read by so many, when I can pass it off to him. He and his family will be meeting the Czuks at a restaurant in our neighborhood, tonight, The food is good, the atmosphere even better, and they have a little free library outside their door. The restaurant (http://www.haroldscabin.com , should anyone be interested), is indeed, one of our favorite neighborhood places, but is also co-owned by Bill Murray, and if you're lucky, there can be a Bill Murray sighting. If you're luckier, he'll sit down and yak with you for a bit.
So, no adventurous wild release... I'll leave that up to ResQgeek.
Welcome to BookCrossing, a unique community of book lovers, sharing their libraries with the world. This book is now yours to read, enjoy, keep or pass on to another reader. The BookCrossing ID, which you entered in the "Enter a BCID" box on the website, is unique to this copy of this book. If you make a journal entry (either anonymously, or as a BookCrossing member) all previous readers of this actual book will be notified by email, and can follow the book as it travels. BookCrossing is free to join, completely confidential (you are known only by your screen name and no one is ever given your e-mail address) and a heck of a lot of fun. Be on the lookout for other books left in the "Wild"!
If you find yourself liking BookCrossing, there may be local BookCrossers who meet regularly in your area. Come join us! I've been a BookCrosser since 2003 and have found books left by others, discovered new authors to read, watched my books travel all over the world, and discovered a delightful group of readers online through BookCrossing.
As for the book...I may have to read this one before passing it along. Unfortunately, Mt. TBR is already huge, so I don't know how long it will take to get to this one.

"Keri Hulme, the New Zealander whose 1984 novel “The Bone People” won the Man Booker Prize, died Dec. 27 (2021) at Waimate on New Zealand’s South Island. She was 74."
RIP Keri Hulme.
Since the CV-19 pandemic I have not been many places to release books. My plan is to release this book to the Little Free Library (LFL) located outside of the main entrance to the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington D.C.
