I picked this book up from the New Zealand author table during the 2009 Annual book crossing convention. I have previously read this book, although many moons ago. I plan to transport it to Europe for people to learn about the New Zealand culture.

Harrowing at times. Amazing writing.

Despite the image of NZ many people have, the UN rate as very poor for raising children in a safe environment.

I'm going to Los Vegas for the weekend, and while there I plan to explore the USA postal system and send this book to fellow bookcrosser Bookczuk.

Edited: 30 Jan 2012...well, I didn't find a post office so sent this book via the UPS store in the hotel I was staying at. It would have probably been cheaper to send the book from the UK, but live and learn. I hope the book enjoys its journey through the American delivery system and safely arrives at the other end.

Journal Entry 7 by wingbookczukwing at Charleston, South Carolina USA on Monday, February 6, 2012
It's a dreary day here in Charleston. The only amusement is watching the American robins as the flocks fly through and land in my yard by the 100's. They're confused by global warming and are migrating north about 3 weeks earlier than usual.

But, the day got a little brighter, because the UPS guy bounded up the stairs to the house and delivered this book. Thank you so much. Sorry you couldn't find a post office. They probably don't have any in Las Vegas -- just places people can wire money to you when you lose your shirt at the casinos. I hate to tell you how cheap it would have been to send the book media mail, but this way the book travelled first class.

Looking forward to reading this after I get through some reading obligations. (Sending hugs and hellos to both previous readers of this book. Two of my favorite BookCrossers.)

Just realized I never made a journal entry oaths book. I read it a few years back, before we moved, and finished it up at our mountain cabin. We're selling the cabin, so I brought the book home again, and am now sending it off to a little free library in another state so it can get some more travelling in.

As to the book itself, what a powerful story! Not an easy book to read, but it did give me a wider glimpse into the unique elements of New Zealand and its people. the details have blurred over time, but it's one of those books you don't forget. I could kick myself for not journalling sooner, when it was fresh in my mind, especially since it was a RABCK.

Journal Entry 9 by wingbookczukwing at Charleston, South Carolina USA on Wednesday, August 23, 2017
This was headed to a friend in Marietta who will do a surrogate release for me at this Little Free Library. I was in town last week, but with no books to leave. Oh, the shame!

BUT

A long time BookCrossing friend is in Charleston because of the eclipse, and it seems a shame to wild release a book read by so many, when I can pass it off to him. He and his family will be meeting the Czuks at a restaurant in our neighborhood, tonight, The food is good, the atmosphere even better, and they have a little free library outside their door. The restaurant (http://www.haroldscabin.com , should anyone be interested), is indeed, one of our favorite neighborhood places, but is also co-owned by Bill Murray, and if you're lucky, there can be a Bill Murray sighting. If you're luckier, he'll sit down and yak with you for a bit.

So, no adventurous wild release... I'll leave that up to ResQgeek.

I received this book last night when we met bookczuk and her husband for dinner in Charleston. It was a great evening and I enjoyed catching up with her after so many years. Hopefully it won't be so long before our next visit.

As for the book...I may have to read this one before passing it along. Unfortunately, Mt. TBR is already huge, so I don't know how long it will take to get to this one.

I got this book at the monthly BCinDC meet-up. Wow! It's a book about NZ and the Maori people that actually started it's BC journey in NZ.

Today I saw the obit of author Keri Hulme in The Washington Post.

"Keri Hulme, the New Zealander whose 1984 novel “The Bone People” won the Man Booker Prize, died Dec. 27 (2021) at Waimate on New Zealand’s South Island. She was 74."

RIP Keri Hulme.

Since the CV-19 pandemic I have not been many places to release books. My plan is to release this book to the Little Free Library (LFL) located outside of the main entrance to the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington D.C.

I am going to release this book to the Little Free Library (LFL) located outside of the main entrance to the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington D.C. This will be my 1st visit to the museums since the covid pandemic closed most things down in the spring, March/April of 2020. 😷 I have a special ticket to see One with Eternity: Yayoi Kusama in the Hirshhorn Collection tomorrow. This exhibit should be a lot of fun and a definite spirit lifter. I've always asociated polka dots with spring... The Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is less than a one block walk to the NMAI.

It's just me SqNutZips capturing my own release. I had planned to release this book yesterday at the LFL at the entrance to the NMAI but the LFL was not longer there! Where did it go? It was there pre pandemic. Talk about a dissapointment. Sadly I could'nt release it anywhere because it was raining and I did not think to bring a ziplock bag with me to put it in for protection so the book has come back home with me to be released at another time.
