This book's title in the UK was ...OF BLESSED MEMORY.

A 100-year epic of a Jewish family in America, told by Sara, who in the year 2005 finds herself drawn into the tumultuous lives of her ancestors. From her great-grandmother Sarah Solomon through to her grandmother Salome and her mother Sally, Sara also gives her own story.

The author can still turn on the raunch when she feels like it, but here we find her older, wiser and more introspective than in her Fear of Flying days. We here meet four generations of the same family: great-grandmother Sarah, a Russian immigrant who flees her tragic, poverty-stricken origins to become a famed society painter; grandmother Salome, a writer, Parisian flapper and lover of Henry Miller; mother Sally, a folk singer and 60s icon; and Sara, mother and historian, who is piecing together her family’s story for an exhibition in 2005 at New York’s Centre for Jewish History. The nature of Jewishness is examined and celebrated, as is the unique love that binds mother and daughter – and it’s also a marvellous read, in the epic family saga tradition.

Contenuto:
