Not as funny as "Stiff", though still good. I DO know more about sex than I do about dead people, so there were fewer "No way!" moments.
I'm going to offer this up as a bookring...

Received this today. I have about 100 pages left in my current book, but once I finish that, this will be next on my TBR stack. Thanks for passing it along. I will update when I have finished reading it.
I finished this up tonight. Mary Roach has a gift for taking what could be very dry subject matter and making it funny and engaging. I enjoyed this book very much and it makes me want to read her other book (Spook) even more.
I think my favorite part of her books is the footnotes.
I have PM'd danielle twice (once when I received the book and again tonight). I haven't heard from her yet and I see that she's a new member so I wonder if she has her bookcrossing e-mails routed to an account she doesn't check very often? Hopefully I'll hear back from her soon, but if not, I guess I need to know when to give up and skip to the next person.
Thanks for sharing this book.

Dropped off at the post office today and it's on its way to Malaysia (never heard back from danielle).
My boyfriend even had a chance to read this while it was in my possession and he enjoyed it too.
I guess some of it's pretty interesting, but it wasn't enough for me. I guess I wasn't in the right frame of mind to appreciate it better because I kind of feel a little rushed to finish this.
I'll probably get my own copy if the price is right.
Will be sending it to madnad this weekend once I get an address.
After having read 100 pages of the book I have decided to give up; this has hardly ever happened before but I didn't find the book interesting enough to struggle through 300 pages. To be honest, I had high expectations of the book but it simply didn't happen to me. Sorry. Will send it to the next person this coming week.

This was waiting for me on Friday, when I arrived home. Can't wait to read it, I had a real laugh with "Six Feet Over". Thanks for sharing, Ajsmom; and thanks for sending it on, Madnad! Eva
Arrived today - thanks! The three kings on your cute card arrived in time for Epiphany. ;)
(Journal entry edited to hopefully avoid confusion.)
This book *won't* qualify for any of the reading or release challenges I'm currently doing (those challenges have heavily influenced my reading choices so far this year), but it sounds like it should be interesting so I'll get to it as soon as possible. That way I can send it to the next person on the list, although I think there might be a typo in that person's BC name...
Now that I can finally see what the picture on the cover is, I have to laugh!
Update: no, I haven't forgotten about this book, really! Sorry it's taken me a while, but I'm on Chapter 14 (of 15) and hope to get it in the mail to perryfran some time during this coming week.

This book answered some questions I never would've thought to ask...and taught me some things I'm not sure I needed to know - for example, how men are like pigs...really. ;)
All in all, an interesting, sometimes astonishing, and often amusing read. Thanks for sharing.
This will be mailed to perryfran tomorrow...meaning Monday, since it's still Sunday night here.
Received in today's mail - This one really looks interesting! Thanks ajsmom for sharing and hyphen8 for sending this on from Hawaii - also thanks for the postcard of Lumahai Beach - makes me want to go somewhere warm! I'll try to get to this as soon as possible, but this is the 4th bookring book I've received in the past couple of weeks - they always come in bunches!
I found this book to be quite entertaining and educational. However, as a male reader there was quite a bit of information that just made me squirm! This included the chapters on penile implants and the information about what Dr. Kinsey inserted into his penis. Roach's subtle humor added along the way was quite entertaining (especially the footnotes) but by the end of the book, I think I had maybe learned more than I wanted about sex research. If you are interested in more about Dr. Kinsey, I would recommend T.C. Boyle's The Inner Circle, a fictionalized account of the famous Doctor and his research. I also noted that there is a video interview with Roach about Bonk on Amazon.com. Click here if interested. Overall a mild recommendation for this one.
I will be sending this on to continue the bookray tomorrow. Hope everyone has fun with this one!

Gee, what can one say about a book like this? I guess you've got to admire anyone who goes to the lengths that Mary Roach does to acquire her research. I read very little non-fiction, but I must say that I enjoy Roach's writing. She knows how to add enough humor to keep the reader interested, although I thought this book could've been a little more condensed than it was. I was ready to be done with it about 3/4 of the way through, although I kept going until the end, just to say I read it all. My favorite parts included:
p. 172-173 (Dr. Foreman's kegal video for strengthening the pelvic floor musculature for men (i.e "Tighten! Tighten! Tighten!" vs. "Titan! Titan! Titan!"))
p. 210 (Mary's description of images that stay with you for the rest of your life (i.e. man in blue smock walking across factory floor w/ armload of chocolate-brown dildos)
p. 252 (Alfred Kinsey's quote about cheese crumbs & male vs. female rats during copulation)
In context, I thought all of these were hysterical! And yes, the footnotes are quite engaging as well. I read "Stiff" on audio, and though I enjoyed it, I think the actual book version is the better way to go in order to fully enjoy all the footnotes, etc. I recently just picked up a copy of "Spooked" at a library sale, so now I'm anxious to read that as well.
I tried to get my book club to read this as a selection a couple months ago, but I was outvoted. LOL! I do think it would make for an interesting group discussion! Thanks, ajsmom & perryfran, for initiating & continuing this bookray! I have hostile17's address & will be mailing within the next day or two.
All in all an interesting and entertaining read. Am I the only one who wonders just how much they had to pay people to sniff used tampons ? Yes, there ARE some things that I'd just rather not know and the "pleasantness" of vaginal odors during the monthly cycle is one of them. I think I enjoyed her witty little footnotes the most.

I really wanted to enjoy this. There were humorous parts, and I agree with the person who liked the footnotes as well. But, I felt like it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Maybe my hopes were too high. Or maybe there was a lot of science and less sex? lol Or, maybe the last book I read was too good that it ruined it for the next book. I don't know. I didn't finish it, but my deadline is coming up and I'm going to be sending it off in the next couple of days. thank you for letting me join! :)

I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as Stiff, still my favorite, but I think I'd enjoy anything Mary Roach writes. Along with the obvious humor, I'm always surprised at how well she's able to explain pretty complicated things in such simple terms. It's nice to have a few impressive facts stored, to fit into conversations.
Waiting for an address from lucy-lemon, and then I'll get it right out.
I've tried both lucy-lemon and Lottiotta for addresses and haven't heard back... I just sent a PM to Rossella05, so I'm crossing my fingers... Will update again when I finally send this book out, but didn't want anyone to think I've abandoned the ray. The book is still sitting here on my desk, waiting for a new home.
Apologies for yet ANOTHER journal entry. I never heard from lucy-lemon or Lottiotta, so I sent this book out to Rossella05 today. If I do hear back from either of them eventually, maybe we can figure out how to add them to the end of the list or re-insert them at some point.
thank you! i have read Stiff and Spook/Six Feet Over, i like Mary Roach's writing style so I expect I'll enjoy this one too. I'm half way through Nora and Liz by Nancy Garden at the moment, as soon I finish it I'll start this one, looking forward to it.

This arrived a couple of days ago, when the power was off in our epic DIY journey in the new house. :) It's always good to get books through the post when all your TBR is in storage boxes several miles away! I started reading it, and have been reading during breaks and on the bus and so on, and I'm already up to page 156.
I'm enjoying it, but some of it I already know. Sex is weird and wonderful! I am wondering if there's going to be a section on gay/lesbian/transgender stuff, because that interests me. I'm also going to PM perryfran about having a friend of mine read it after me.
So, my bkkeepr page is here, you can stalk me to see which page I'm on and what else I'm reading! Likewise, my Velocity of Reading graph might interest you.

This book was an interesting read, maybe a little too much science and bio / not enough sex for my liking! I was a little too squeamish for some parts of the book, especially the animal stuff but it is good that she covered a lot of different aspects. The people Roach meets for interview are real characters, quite hilarious. I especially loved Dr Hsu in chapter 6. I also loved the footnotes, and would like to point out my favourites (which each induced a small giggling fit) - pg.60 "Decorative Penile Wrap"... and pg.96 "Who clubs a hamster?"...

I'm giving this a 10 because I quite simply really enjoyed it. Thanks very much ajsmom for sharing it!
I will contact the next participant for an address and get it moving as soon as I can. We are in the middle of postal strikes at the moment, hope it won't be held up for too long...
This book takes the cake for being the unsexiest book about sex I have ever read. Not that I read many books about sex. Let's just say it wasn't quite what I had expected. And sadly, I didn't learn anything new that could actually be helpful to boost my own sexlife.
Like other readers I thought it could have been a great deal shorter. There were some icky parts that I skipped (really, who wants to read the details of a penis operation?) and some parts that were just plain boring (the stuff about the pig inseminators *yawn*), but for the most part it was an entertaining read. The thought of all those for the most part rather boring scientific papers and books Mrs. Roach had had to go through to research all this is pretty impressive. But still, the book is lightyears away from the hilarity that was "Stiff". Or maybe it's just that I find the intricacies of death and decay way more interesting than the ones of sex.
I already contacted the next person on the list and will send the book on as soon as I get an address.
Damn, I totally forgot to send off this book, even though I had the next address for a couple of days! Sorry for the delay. It is finally on its way now.

I really enjoyed this. I found it equally informative, entertaining, funny and gruesome. I think if I had been a man, I might have been squirming at certain sections. As it was I think some people at the airport might have been wondering what I was reading while waiting for my delayed plane. Journal Entry 80 by silvia-pco at Murtosa, Aveiro Portugal on Friday, October 21, 2011
First of all, I'm sorry I've kept this for so long, but I've been having reader's block lately and it took a toll on my Mt. TBR. :/
I have mixed feelings about this book. It was very interesting, actually, but I guess I expected it to be a little different; maybe with a little more fun and a little less science.
Despite that, you really get to learn a lot from this. There are interesting facts, some you had never thought you'd get to know about. There are some very brave scientists out there, and some brave "test subjects" (can't think of a better expression) as well. The experiments and studies they do can get really weird sometimes :D I found myself to be squirming during some bits that weren't even about women, so I wonder how a men feels when he reads this book, particularly the chapters about penis operations and so forth. But all in all, even with those bits that make you slightly uncomfortable and others that are just a bit boring, it was a good read. I'm now expecting to get my hands on other books by Mary Roach, as I've seen some better reviews about those.
Thank you so much for sharing! The book's already on its way to sarabe1.

Journal Entry 84 by duskiska at Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Sunday, January 15, 2012
Haha, what a great book! Mary Roach has the ability to write deliriously funny and easy to read books which are also very clear in their subject matter. Her books are popular science at its best. And she describes the different situations she's in so vividly you can just see the scientists in your soul's eye. Unlike many others I found the whole book really engaging, even the bits about penile operations and pig inseminations. :)
You have to admire the lengths to the author goes in gathering information for her books, acting as a guinea pig herself. Even more admirable is the work the scientists do despite facing the ridicule of their peers and the suspicions of those who control the money flow. Ok yes, fingering a female monkey to see if they have orgasms raised my eyebrows too. :P But seriously speaking, I had somehow assumed that humans are the only animal where the females have orgasms. So this book was actually educational too, I learned a lot in reading this.
