I love the premise of this novel: Dante Valentine is a licenced Necromance, a psion who's trained to raise the dead. She does this as a legal service to help in disputed wills and jury trials. She's also a bounty-hunter, bringing in some really baaaad people and other psions. The book's whole world is described very neatly and believably - the entire world order has been changed, there are 3 major governments, no organized religions, a return to worship of multiple gods, and lots of "other" type of beings. There are werecains (werewolf types), swanhildes (bird-types), and others that work magick (not magic). Dante is angst-filled, alone and struggling with demons (literal and figurative) from her past. I was excited to have found this book, it reminds me quite a bit of the promise of the STORY behind Laurel Hamilton's work, before it degraded into porn.

The reason for the 3 rating? I think this book is poorly written. TOO much angst and soul-searching for my taste: OK, we get that Dante is unhappy, that she has trust issues, that she can't give herself completely to love. But do we have to be told all these thing in every other paragraph? I'm exaggerating, but it feels that way sometimes. Saintcrow also tends to say things like "I stood, and..."then in the next paragraph says "Then I stood...". Didn't she already stand up?

So I'm going to read the others in the series, but I'll be sure to read other stuff in between, otherwise I may just toss little Dante away. Too bad, this is the kind of fiction I LOVE.

I wrote the above for the 1st 3 in this series, by4 and 5, they had actually gotten better. I'm glad I kept going but won't re-read any of these. Hope you enjoy!

Left in front of the Block Buster video rental; didn't find anything to rent. Looked at "Sweeney Todd" but since it's a musical and nobody in my family likes musicals, didn't get it.
