Humbert Humbert is attracted to prepubescent girls, whom he calls “nymphets”. His cravings find their perfect target in Dolores, the daughter of his landlady, and he contrives to spend as much time with Dolores as he can.
The subject matter of this book, pedophilia, isn't very acceptable nowadays, and telling the story from Humbert's point of view probably makes it even less acceptable. But Nabokov is really an excellent writer and his prose is just beautiful, so this book is definitely worth reading even if you were repulsed by the subject matter. The language isn't always easy (Nabokov clearly has a large vocabulary, which he isn't afraid to use), but after a while the style just sucks you in and keeps you reading on and on.
