The animals at Manor Farm have had enough of their treatment at the hands of the farmer, Jones, and stage a revolt led by the pigs. The new Animal Farm will be run on principles guaranteeing equality for all animals, but the running of the farm turns out to have some problems requiring some adjustment in how work and products get divided. Orwell wrote this as a pretty obvious allegory of the Soviet revolution, but the themes certainly apply on a larger scale.

The book is very short, but it manages to pack in all the essentials of its described failed revolution. Orwell is a good writer, and while the important points are often made somewhat heavy-handedly, there is little real preaching in the book. Ostensibly, the tale is about a revolution where the leaders betray the principles, but it can also be seen as describing how the leaders of any nation turn their backs on the people and only care about themselves. Well worth reading and thinking about.
