I really enjoyed this book. I won't watch the movie because there is just no way it could stack up.
I have plagerised Bookhavn's review:
*
Tom Ripley is one of the most amoral characters I have ever met...in fiction or in real life. I enjoyed this book so much that I searched out the other four books in the series and liked them just as much as this one. Highsmith takes you inside his head so you can see his moral stance and the many manipulations he employs to reach the life he feels he well deserves. He's creepy and evil and most of all disturbing because you actually begin to relate to him..) *
*
and savannahblue:
*
To that, I would add that I am dazzled by Highsmith's skill - Ripley is such a psychopath, but she draws you so carefully into his deranged head that you find yourself rooting for him, and against the "innocent" people.
*
because they sum up what I would like to say - so much better than I can actually say it!!
.
Blurb:
In a chilling literary hall of mirrors, Patricia Highsmith introduces Tom Ripley. Like a latter-day Henry James hero, he is sent to Italy with the commission to coax Dickie Greenleaf back to his wealthy father. But Ripley finds himself very fond of this prodigal young American. He wants to be like him - exactly like him. Suave, agreeable, and utterly amoral, Ripley stops at nothing - certainly not only one murder - to accomplish his goal.
