"Simultaneously at the center and in the vanguard of mainstream culture and the homosexual subculture of three continents, Harold Norse has led a most amazing life. His career began in 1939, as friend and secretary of WH Auden, who had taken away his college lover, Chester Kallman. Despite the numerous books on Auden and Kallman, this is the first to present the definitive eyewitness account of how they met, shedding new light on the little-known period of their relationship from 1939 to 1945. When an excerpt appeared in the Advocate, the meaty details of Auden's sex life aroused some readers to towering rage while most defended the revelations with equal fervor...The Memoirs depict a lifestyle truly free from the common restraints of society, before the grim advent of AIDS in the 1980s made it a vanishing way of life. Under any circumstances this book would be a major social document, but because he is a superb, evocative stylist, Harold Norse's candid autobiography is, in its own right, an engrossing classic of its kind."
Bookboxes are wonderful for house cleaning: I discovered several books that I'd never registered and here's one that I read but didn't journal! Oops. I read it quite a while ago and remember enjoying it but having some mixed feelings. There are parts that feel a bit like name-dropping. But there are also parts that are very funny. Mr. Norse certainly has had a full life.
