Journal Entry 1 by MrsJennings from Plymouth, Devon United Kingdom on Friday, May 2, 2008
Magical first book by Louis de Bernieres (of Captain Corelli's Mandolin fame)set in an imaginary Latin American country.

The Blurb:

'When the spoilt and haughty Dona Constanza tries to divert a river to fill her swimming pool, she starts a running battle with the locals. The skirmishes are so severe that the Government dispatches a squadron of soldiers led by the fat, brutal and stupid Figueras to deal with them.

Despite visiting plagues of laughing fits and giant cats upon the troops, the villagers know that to escape the cruel and unusual tortures planned for them, they must run. Thus they plan to head for the mountains and start a new and convivial civilisation.'

I am very sorry Mrs Jennings, but by page 50 this book is not engaging me and so I have decided to pass it on. I am contacting the next person and will journal again once it is on its way. The problem undoubtedly lies with me - I am a bit overloaded at the moment and my brain seems unable to cope with anything which is not presented in words of one syllable. It is undoubtedly well written, but I am struggling with the names, and politics is not my strong suit. So all in all, Don Emmanuel and I are probably not ideal reading partners! Thanks anyway for letting me have the chance to try it.

received in the post today. Scheduled to be read during my vacation next week. I am looking forward to reading this one. Pm'd the next reader on the list for her address today.

I found this book to be a real page-turner. A bit baldy but very entertaining.

Update: posted out to the next reader on the list.

Unfortunately, I've not yet had a chance to read this. Life has been too hectic and with the holidays coming I doubt I'd be able to get through any time soon. So, since I've already had the book for quite some time, and to be fair to my fellow BCers, I'm going to send it to the next person (as soon as I have contact info) and will just have to try and catch it another time.

Thanks anyway!
