A great man and author, biog by a fine American writer...what more could I want? (well chapter headings, a bibliography and timeline would be nice, but i'm being picky)

(5/06) This was fascinating, if a little on the heavy side, why did Jane Smiley imagine she had to be so verbose and academic? A bit more fun and colour would have alleviated the stream of analysis. But, still, a great introduction to the great man, his relationships, his life and works. The first media star, a social campaigner, editor, tourist, troubadour...and much much more. His energy is tiring, but one got the impression that the constant effort was maybe a striving for some deeper meaning, definition or transformation?

I was inspired to read some more Dickens so bought a cheap copy of Hard Times :)
