Journal Entry 1 by VeganMedusa from Invercargill, Southland New Zealand on Sunday, April 27, 2008
Winterson has re-written The Book of Genesis and turned it into a surreal Cecil B De Mille epic. Feminism and Twentieth Century kitchenware run riot in the ancient city of Ur; Noah is Howard Hughes crossed with Frankenstein - an eccentric overseer of thriving capitalism who makes 'God' 'by accident out of a piece of gateau and a giant electric toaster.'
The result is a tetchy, omnipotent icecream cone who decides to drown all the decadence of Winterson's world (and, curiously, that world resembles Queensway) in a flood - out of which, of course, a more fitting myth can be born, ie that God is a benevolent old man with a white beard who loves us all.
