Jane Austen's final work, published posthumously in 1818. I like to believe that, in this one final effort, there is a lot of Austen in the person of Anne Elliot: and an ending to her own tale that Austen fashioned for herself, a consolation and a happiness.
All of Austen's work is fine, crafted, witty, sometimes caustic in its gentle (but don't always trust the gentle) way: always intelligent. True, her worlds are small, self-referential, some might say petty in their concerns: but you must believe in them, and their endurance and the fact that they feature in bestseller lists even today attests to their truth for so many people.
Read it, then the rest of them: and please pass this little one on for someone else to enjoy. Thank you.

I found the book yesterday and I've just started to read it.
Not one of Austen's best for sure. The heroine is a bit to shy and drawn back for my taste. And I don't think the romance story ever really catches on. But still, enjoyable and quite amusing. And it is still Jane Austen, which of course makes it worth reading.
