Cute little story about two young men - boys, actually - sent to the country from the city during China's Cultural Revolution, where they learn about more than working in mines and in fields. They meet the daughter of a tailor and impress her with their story-telling skills.

Their bleak lives are enlivened by this friendship, and more so by the stash of banned books that they find and read and then offer to the little seamstress in dramatic stories.

It is quickly read, this book, a touching but not cloying story and a glimpse into the lives led once upon a time in a land across the sea.
