The narrator is taken by his father to the cemetery of forgotten books in Barcelona, books that have been forgotten and are waiting for someone to discover them again. He picks out a book there, The Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carfax. He is entranced by the book and tries to find out more, only to find that someone is destroying all copies of the book. He is caught into the tale of the author and his life. This has gotten a lot of buzz amongst other readers and has been compared to The Club Dumas. Personally I liked that book better and will probably not re-read this. However, I seem to be in the minority on this opinion so I hope you like it better!
