Someone left a big pile of stuff curbside not far from my house with "Free" signs on it. There were several boxes of books, which I quickly loaded into the van, to register and release.

To be given away at the BookCrossing booth at the Day of the Book festival in Kensington, MD.

After the International Day of the Book Festival on April 27th, 2008 there were many books left over. Although I tried not to take very many of them this one did come home with me. I hope to help it continue its journey soon.

This book is an award winner and I like to read the award winning books to see if I would have regarded them as highly or given them an award myself. I will be adding this book to Mt. TBR.

This book was on the Sequoyah Book Award Masterlist for Children for the year 1979.

Sponsored by the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA), the annual Sequoyah Book Award is a student’s choice award presented since 1959. The program added a Young Adult literature award in 1987. Books chosen for the annual Sequoyah masterlist are selected by two committees of OLA members. Each member of the committee reads over 100 books before recommending titles for the masterlists.
During the school year, young Oklahomans from grades three through junior high are encouraged to read the titles from the masterlist. Students must read or listen to three books in order to cast a vote. The winning book is announced in February and the award is presented during the annual Oklahoma Library Association’s spring conference.
With this award, Oklahoma honors the Native American leader, Sequoyah, for his unique achievement in creating the Cherokee syllabary. In so doing, he created a way to preserve his people’s language and culture.

This book is a Newbery Medal Winner for the year 1977.

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

One of my favorite features of BookCrossing is the opportunity to track books where ever they may go. We just moved from Waldorf, MD to Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. and it is time to update each book's location and make sure that we have located each book after the move.

I am trying to set the status of all my books to be correct at this time.

Permanent Collection (PC) means that I plan to keep this book for the foreseeable future.

Available (AVL) means that I have read the book or don't desire to read the book and it is ready to move on in some fashion.

To Be Read (TBR) means that I plan to read it (at least someday) and after I read it I will decide what to do with it.

This is a book that tells of a time that is so far away from everything that I know from living in this generation. It is very informative and I would think it a valuable book to teach students what it was like in the time of the Logan family.

There are many clever things in the book as well as many tragedies and heartache. I enjoyed reading it and I hope that this book finds a new reader that will enjoy it as I have.

This book was read for the 2010 Reduce My Mount TBR Challenge from the release challenge forum. For this challenge the book must have been acquired before the start of 2010. My goal is to get 100 of these books off of my shelves and into the world by reading them!
