I took this from the 50 state book box, it is safe and will not be forgotten on my TBR. after I have read it I will pass it on.
'm on page 140 of 371 of A Thousand Acres: As soon as I picked up this book and saw it was a family drama in middle America on a farm, I thought to myself; It is going to contain adultery and likely child sexual abuse as well and I am going to hate it. So far the adultery has only resulted in a kiss, but adultery is committed in the heart and mind before it reaches the body stage. I can almost feel that child sexual abuse coming. I hate this book.
Even with my powers of prediction, I did not see some of this coming. I really did not change my opinion of the book however. Sad, useless, pitiful, hopeless; that is how it felt. So I was anxious to finish it and pushed it just to be done.
The one thing I did like and was constantly amazed at was the German/Scandinavian farm wife. I was so impressed with the ability to constantly have meals ready at a certain time, the coffee and cake always ready for anyone who dropped by, the really clean house, the productive garden. I decided to play German/Scandinavian housewife (never mind farm wife, I have a black thumb) and CLEAN and COOK and, should I put on some coffee in case someone stops by?
