A great book, hard to put down (if I may say so myself). Sent it to a fellow Bookcrosser in Malaysia at her request.

Thanks to Kazuri for mailing it all the way to Borneo!! A colleague of mine, who's studying an endemic species of primates, is going to take this book to the field for some solitary reading. Next in line, is another colleague who's working on hunting patterns in the local communities. I'd like to read it after that and pass it on to other interested folks.

I passed it on to the Big Onion to some book-reading while he works in the field. I've been encouraging him to sign up for an account at bookcrossing.com and while he makes pleasant onion noises about it, i highly doubt that he'd actually go ahead and do it. Anyway, he says that the book was entertaining and that he'd give 6 or 7 stars (six and a half??) out of 10 for it.

It's now travelling to another fieldsite in Sarawak, courtesy of Dozer...

someprimate kindly released this to me to keep me entertained in the field. Looking forward to reading it. Rubs hands in anticipation...

ya know, i don't think Dozer actually read the book. She did hand it back to me though, and so I finally read it.

Verdict?

I enjoyed it! It was entertaining and as a fellow biologist in malaysia, I appreciated reading about related environmental issues in Africa, such as building a road through a park, hunting issues, etc. I thought it felt a bit rushed towards the end though. Overall, worth a recommendation.

I have given this book to one of my fieldworkers, Nyanggau, in Batang Ai National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia. He's a pretty amazing fellow. Speaks good english and has kept a diary in english for over a decade!! He's been working in the field for that amount of time as well. He likes to read books in english and I thought that this book would be very interesting to him - for one thing, while opening up a new culture/country to him, but at the same time realizing that no matter where you are, people working for the goal of wildlife conservation pretty much encounter the same complex issues. Will find out what he thinks about this book when he's done. Thanks to Kazuri for sending it off to me!
