This started out a bit slow, but became a rich story by the end. It didn't turn out how I expected, yet it was a satisfying end. In some ways, things seemed too simple for Emma and far too hard for Joan. Did Joan get a hard time for being beautiful? Did Emma get an easier time for being brainy? Each of their lives had tragedy, but I think the main message of this book is that family is everything.
