A novel in which an elderly writer with a block, surrounded by predatory friends and relations, seeks to escape, but his failure to do so and its aftermath lead to a violent climax. From the author of THE SEA, THE SEA and THE BELL.

I tried this but couldn't really get into it.

With a 5.5 hour train journey, it wasn't hard to get through this book, I think it needed large chunks of time devoted to it. I spent a large part of the book being frustrated with Bradley. At first, he seemed to just let people walk all over him, the way his friends and family treated him was thoughtless and selfish. But then, as the book progressed, I got the feeling he was more lonely - he seemed to be in love with all the women at some point. However, the codas from the other characters puts an entirely different spin on the book and made me question the integrity of the narrator.

An interesting read but not one of Murdoch's best.

This book is off to the Edinburgh Uncon as a surprise for someone's goody bag.

Thank you, whoever-it-was who thought of this for me. It's the next one up in our Murdoch reading challenge.

UPDATE:
This was not one of my favourites. It was rather like Murdoch writing a parody of herself.
