You've not only found a book, but also a wonderful community of readers and book lovers who think our books should be "out there," not gathering dust on our shelves. We register our books at BookCrossing.com so we can keep up with where they go, who reads them, and what people think of them. We release books "into the wild," trade books, and discuss all things bookish on our forums.
If you like the BookCrossing concept, you might want to register a screen name (no one is ever given your e-mail address), so that you can keep up with this book, and maybe release others. Or you can journal this book as Anonymous Finder. It's all perfectly safe, confidential, fascinating, and fun. If you do join, please tell the BookCrossing powers that be, that MarysGirl sent you their way.
Thanks and Happy “Crossings!”

Trade paperback in decent condition - crimped cover corner and slightly yellowed pages. From the back:
"Before Garrison Keillor and Spaulding Gray, there was Jean Shepherd: a master monologist and writer who spun the materials of his all-American childhood into immensely resonant--and utterly hilarious--works of comic art. In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash represents one of the peaks of his achievement, a compound of irony, affection, and perfect detail that speaks across generations...A comic genius who bridges the gap between James Thurber and David Sedaris, Shepherd may have accomplished for Holden, Indiana, what Mark Twain did for Hannibal, Missouri."
My review: I've loved Jean Shepherd ever since I saw the now classic movie A Christmas Story in the theater. PBS fueled this with several pieces based on his stories. However, I hadn't read anything by him until a few years ago when I picked up a collection of his stories. I still hear his voice narrating while I read. In God We Trust does not disappoint. This collection contains the stories that were the basis for the movie including the seminal "Duel in the Snow, or Red Ryder Nails the Cleveland Street Kid," as well as the stories about the "special award" his father won, the bully, and the Little Orphan Annie decoder ring; and many more stories besides. I highly recommend this one.

I thought an update might be in order. I am presently reading about the 4th of July (130pages or about 1/2 way through).
I hear the narrator from A Christmas Story as I read. I also picture Ralphie, Flick, and the Old Man from the movie. I know my neighbors think I am losing my mind. I sit on my patio laughing out loud.
I am hoping to complete on Wed. I have the next participant's address.

Parts of the book went a little slow but overall if you enjoyed the movie A Christmas Story, I think you would like this book.
Portions of this book remind me of things my Mom and Dad would say about growing up during the depression. My grandmother had glassware from going to the movies.
A pleasant quick read.

Received this in the mail today, thanks Bug2004 and MarysGirl. I look forward to reading this one very soon. Will contack WanderingB for her address.
Forgive me for holding on to this book for so long. I will be sending this book on to WanderingB with in the next two weeks, just waiting for payday to come around again.
Okay, I enjoyed most of this book, especially the parts about Christmas and the Father's lamp, but unfortunately I have seen the movie so many times that I knew what was going to happen.
Thank you for including me in this bookring.

Received last week and have been enjoying thumbing through it. Will give it a proper read soon - have two in front of it.
Quite amusing book - especially since we can all visualize the characters from the movie. Stories from our youth and a kinder/gentler age are fun to read. Thanks for sharing! I'll find a suitable home for it soon.
Passing along to my Secret Santa for a little light-hearted read!
Sorry for the late JE Wandering-B! I love the entire Christmas package, but have been unable to post due to helping my parents who are not in good health. I very much look forward to reading this one! :-)
