This novel is set in Lancashire. A mother who has ambitious for her adopted daughter- she is to become a missionary, a saint, a public emblem of her own evangelical purity. But this daughter has very different ideas of her own.

This story is based on the strong christian ideals of a mother, and an adopted daughter who struggles through life trying to please the Lord, and through him, please her mother.

Despite it's highly religious content, this is a fabulous story of a girl growing up with a control freak for a mother. This novel is beautifully written and very emotional.
