This is a fantastic book: Razor sharp writing with lots of laugh out loud moments.
It is the first book I’ve read by Brookmyre and I’ll defiantly read more. In fact, I might have to read this one again before I release it...
Back page blurb:
In Kilbokie Bay on the Cromarty Firth, a disused oil platform has been undergoing a slow and expensive transformation into the Floating Island Paradise Resort, a self-contained complex of hotels, swimming pools and shopping malls, almost ready to be towed to sunnier climes. It is Gavin Hutchison’s vision for the future of holidays. However, bookings have been slow, and though Gavin still believes in his dream, his backers are getting jumpy. Nervous, stressed and depressed, he decides to cheer himself up by organising an ego-boosting school reunion on-board his masterpiece. Giving little thought to the wisdom of assembling thirty people who never liked each other in a confined space, he makes his preparations for the night of his life.
But Gavin’s not the only one planning to make the party go with a bang.
Inspector Hector McGregor, meanwhile, is planning a celebration of his own: today is his first official day of retirement after thirty years on the force. Taking the Cromarty air on a morning stroll, he luxuriates in the knowledge that for him, violence, horror and mayhem are all things of the past. For the future, think fishing. Think golf. Think gardening.
Think again.
One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night brings Christopher Brookmyre’s distinctive, heat-warming style to the touching story of what unfolds when the pupils of St Michael’s are reunited after fifteen long years: reminiscence, reconciliation, old secrets, rekindled passions, joy, laughter, hijackers, murder, vengeance, machine-guns, rocket-launchers... that sort of thing.
Welcome to the party. Dress casual. Bring your own bullets.
