I ususally enjoy Fay Weldon's writing, but Mount Toberead is already out of control, so I'm setting this one free to travel....

'Presented under its original British title, Affliction, Weldon's controversial 1993 roman a clef is read by the author, and her performance may still be better served by the book's American title, Trouble. Weldon practically races through the tenth year of a once blissful marriage and the pregnancy of the lead character. Annette is a newly successful author whose first novel may itself be too thinly disguised as fiction; her previously supportive husband, Spicer, is fighting bankruptcy and other demons. The changes in their lives now face the scrutiny of psychiatrists, astrologers, and hypnotherapists. The conflicts are sharply drawn but evoke little real sympathy.'
