Another book by one of my favourite authors, and featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti. Bound to be a great read.

From back cover
"When Commissario Guido Brunetti is visited by a young bureaucrat investigating the lack of official approval for the building of his apartment years before, his first reaction, like any other Venetian, is to think of whom he knows who might bring pressure to bear on the relevant government department. But when the bureaucrat rings Brunetti at work, clearly scared, and is then found dead after a fall from scaffolding, something is clearly going on that has implications greater than the fate of Brunetti's own apartment..."

Never quite know whether to rate books like this an 8 or a 9. They have a very definite value of 9 if other Brunetti fans want to know how this ranks but for people not yet acquainted with him they might not see this as a '9', specially if they are more serious readers. I gave it an '8' but as I wrote this and thought more I've changed it to a '9'.

I really enjoyed it. Donna Leon has developed her members of the Brunetti family further in this tale. For Venice lovers too, she is capturing the essence of the city with its glories and its underside. Published in 2001 who knows how this series will continue - can't wait for more.

Did Sherlock Fan alsa a wondrous geneologist give this to me on purpose? The main charcter is Brunetti, the name I cannot find anything about on my family tree.
I wonder if the lovely Brunetti has the traits of that GGG Grandfather of mine who I know so very little about. Perhaps he was like this police man an intelligent Venetian instead of a wandering goldminer. How tantalising, I must track the rest of this series down, perhaps even write to the author and ask her where she got the name from.

PS There is a coffe shop in Melbourne of the same name. I know so littel , perhaps it is common as Smith or Patel and Wong. Who Knows?
