The Welsh Girl
13 journalers for this copy...
Set in Wales towards the end of WW2, The Welsh Girl follows three main characters. All three are bilingual, confused about their identities, and ashamed of something.
There’s something very pleasing about the sympathy with which Davies draws his characters. He allows us to see their confusion and to watch them trying to establish their own identities outside the labels of others. The chronology and structure work well. The writing is assured. The themes of loyalty, identity, honour and nationality are woven into every narrative strand; visible even in the scenery.
This is an easy read; in some ways slightly too easy. Almost all the characters are sympathetic. This challenges on one level – no stereotypical Nazi baddies here – but means there is little contrast in tone. There’s a lack of passion that keeps the novel from being truly arresting. Nonetheless, this debut makes a promise of good books to come.
I'm going to organise a bookray for this. PM me with your shipping preferences if you'd like to join at any point and I'll add you to the list. I'll send it out to the first person before the end of August.

I'll be taking this to the Post Office this lunchtime for its first journey - to Inver in Aberdeen. Happy reading, everyone!
Booked dropped through the letter box this morning, thank you. Just noticed your address Helen, my mum had a cousin lived around that area in Edinburgh, small world. And yes the art work on the cover is lovely. And I love book mark, penguins my favourite at Edinburgh zoo. I have a few bookrings on the go at the moment, but will get to it as soon as I can.
22/9/08 This one is next on my TBR pile after current bookring.
28/9/08 Will be starting this today.
10/10/08 Should I be struggling to read this one!!
After struggling a bit to pick up this storyline, once a third of the way in I was enjoying it more. A very personal and human story about the lives of three very different people in Wales 1944 and how war time has affected them. All have their personal tales to tell, but their paths connect at various points partly by their patriotic tendancies and where their loyalties lie. The relationship between Karsten and Esther are explored with some tenderness I thought. Two human beings whose paths have crossed unexpectedly through no fault of their own. The descriptions of the local areas and life in a small welsh town in this era is very well written.
Thanks for the chance to read this one Nell-Lu. I have the address for 'dare2believe' and will get it in the post this week.

Great book anyway, although I mast say a bit hard to follow at the begginig.
Sending on to Martjxox soon. Enjoy!

This fascinating book is going travelling again, this time by book box. This was a very interesting story about relationships between people during WWII.

The story takes place at the end of the Second World War in Wales and is a different kind of war story. A gripping, interesting and sometimes beautiful story.
I'm so glad I got to read this book and impressed that it has been in so many countries and takes the opportunity to send a greeting to all previous readers.
The book stays with me for a while before traveling on
