Book Review by acountkel on Amazon.com:

I have just finished reading Go Ask Alice. It's not a long book but a great book all the same. It tells us the thoughts of Alice's in her own words, written to her beloved diary, the only thing she felt she could confide in. It shows us how easy it could be to be drawn into the world of drugs, even when, as with Alice, it's not through your own choice (her 'friends' thought it would be fun to load bottles of cola with LSD!). Alice also shows us what a vicious circle it can be, even when she was trying to go straight and seemed to be succeeding, her earlier acquaintances wouldn't take no for an answer. You almost feel Alice's emotions through her words, her love, her hate, her pain, her disappointment (for those people in her life but mostly in herself). Not to preach, but if parents and schools only have one book on their bookself to refer to about drug use and it's effects this should be it. Buy it and make sure your children or school pupils read it. Alice decided that she wanted to help kids that had been in her positon and lived through what she had lived through, unfortunately this cannot be achieved in her life but hopefully it can be achieved through her words to her diary.

This story turns out NOT to be written by a teenager.
Here's the story: Go Ask Alice - Urban Legend

Journal Entry 5 by JennyC1230 from Woodstock, Georgia USA on Wednesday, April 16, 2008
I finished reading this book this morning. My best friend Beth and I in high school decided to make a pact to never try drugs after reading this book. I still love the book! Even knowing that it is not a "real" diary, it is very realistic. I worked in a rehab for teenagers and a lot of them would tell me their "story". Many of them had this same story. Most of them came from good families, who loved them and cared for them. One thing that rang really true is that so many kids who do drugs "get clean" then go back to their life and get back on drugs. Their friends who do drugs don't understand why you won't do drugs anymore and so if you ignore them then you have no friends. But if you start hanging with them you are too tempted to start doing drugs again. This is the story all the kids told me at the rehab center.

It's a very good story and I think most teenagers should read it.

I also read James Frey's book A Million Little Pieces. I didn't know it wasn't real until later, but the same thing, it is a good story. It's supposed to be completely true, but it has been embellished. He shouldn't have said it was all completely true, but it's still a good story!

I'm going to see if anyone is interested in a bookring with this or maybe a Ray it Forward.

Okay for starters this book scared the crap outta me. I am 31 years old and it scared me. Mainly because we still have a nasty drug problem in the USA. If it's not LSD, Acid, heroin, or pot. It's Meth, prescription drugs, or insect repellant. I am glad I read this book, and i am now going to make it mandatory that each of my kids read this book, at the age of 12. If not for educational purposes at least to see what the world of drugs does to a young person, heck even older people. Thanks for sharing this book, I'll be sendgin it out tomorrow.

This book was quite disturbing. I read it as a teenager, but I think it affected me more now that I am a parent.
I mailed it to the next person on the bookring on May 12,2008.

Journal Entry 13 by pzarks from Portland, Oregon USA on Wednesday, May 21, 2008
I finished this while I was on vacation. It was a quick, easy read. I can see how this book would scare teenagers away from trying drugs. Some of the scenes were very sad and disturbing, even though it isn't really a true story. I felt like the 'diary' ended on a nice note and I could have done without the epilogue.
Thanks for sharing!

Sorry for holding this up - I actually finished reading a couple of weeks ago but have been plagued by internet problems since so haven't been able to update.

Anyway, I'm not sure that "enjoyable" is the right word to use to describe my experience in reading this, given the subject matter, but it certainly wasn't a book I regretted taking the time to read. While I think it would have been a lot better had it actually been a real teenage diary from the era it still has quite an impact, and if it stops just one young person from getting hooked on drugs then I would say it has served its purpose.

Getting posted out tomorrow to ACE-W
Thanks for sharing

Received through the post today from Vamperstein8782. Many thanks. I have a couple of others to get through first but will read this and pass it on as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 18 by ACE-W from Blandford Forum, Dorset United Kingdom on Sunday, July 13, 2008
I have been looking for a copy of this book for a while, having read it before as a teenager when it had quite an impact on me. The story was more shocking and darker than I remembered it. It reminds me how self-destructive human beings can be. Thanks for the opportunity to read it JennyC1230. I will pass this on to frangelle as soon as I have an address.

I am so glad this story is not true, as it was horrifying!!! I got to (what I thought was the last page) and thought 'aw that's nice' and then noticed the epilogue which sent a shiver down my spine. Then come on here and read another journal saying it's a fake, which relieved me a bit. Although we have to be aware that these things ARE happening in the world today.

On its way to OnlyLiana now, hope you like it! x

Journal Entry 22 by OnlyLiana from Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom on Friday, August 15, 2008
Arrived safetly this morning. Perfect timing as i'm just about to finish reading Casino Royale. I'll start reading this either this evening or tomorrow. Cheers.

Journal Entry 23 by OnlyLiana from Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, August 19, 2008
I think perhaps my experience of this book was tainted by the fact I already knew it was a fake. I didn't feel any sympathy for the character like I would have done if I thought it was genuine.
Will post on tomorrow to Supertalya.

Journal Entry 24 by Supertalya on Thursday, September 4, 2008
Just received it in the post today! I have a few rings ahead of it, but it looks like a quick read.

Update: Pretty scary book. I remember high school and it would have been pretty easy to go down the same road as the main character. I was in high school 10 years ago and I don't see very much changing anytime soon. When I have children, I would like them to read this as teenagers. I know it ended up being a fake diary but it could have very been true.

I just asked for the next reader's address.
