This book arrived a couple of weeks ago and I've read the first 200 pages. It's not the sort of thing I normally read but it's keeping me entertained so far. The whole business of the politics of the court is really interesting-was it really like this? Thanks to 24-7-365 Reader for posting this on and the beautiful Malvern Hills postcard. Kia ora!

Historical fiction has had a good track record in recent times with the likes of Sarah Waters et al leading the way. Sadly, Sarah Waters this ain't. The Other Boleyn Girl charts the tumultuous life of Mary Boleyn, sister of the Queen of England.
The pacy narrative will appeal to most but for me it cheapens the whole courtly landscape. This is fine if you are into Stephen King but for others, the book depicts an important time in Tudor England and deserves some serious treatment. To alter historical facts (Mary was the older sister, not Anne) damages the book's credibility.
The book will serve as a useful guide (of sorts) for those studying the period and it made me go on Wikopedia to look up the life of Mary Boleyn. It is very hard to sympathise with any of these characters and you find yourself searching long and hard for ways to empathise with the protagonists. Even Mary Boleyn threatens the burgeoning Jane Seymour with crude physical violence.
At the end I was wondering who was to blame. Anne for her ambition? Uncle Howard as the chief architect behind the rise of the Boleyn girls? Mary for seducing the King? The King for his infidelity?
I would like to recommend Robert Harris if you enjoyed this particularly Pompeii and a more recent book, Cicero.
A big hearty thanks to 24-7-365 Reader for resurrecting this bookring on behalf of LindyLouMac. I'll email Bookworm-Lady and get it in the post.

Well, I finally finished reading this one (unexpectedly long!).
Rich in detail, very well researched, the characters really come alive.
Although I have always enjoyed reading and finding out about the Tudors, I wasn't familiar with Mary Boleyn until I saw the film (which glosses over some of the passages in the book, such as Anne's repeated miscarriages.
Really enjoyable, this gave me many pleasant evenings!
Soon to be sent to Zepplin.
Thanks for sharing this!

Just picked up the book from the Post Office this morning. I have an ill child at home so we are going to have a snuggly day on the sofa and I can get started reading. Can't wait.

I could not put it down. It really gave a great detail of life and intrige at the Court of Henry V111. It also gave a very chilly impresssion of what it must have been like to be a female in an imbitious family. I then bought the DVD of the film and was hugely disappointed because the book was so good.

Thank you for sharing the book with me.

This books seems determind to get lost along its way, this was a second oopy, I continued a Bookray started by somebody else as their copy was lost, mine too has failed to make it's way home, no doubt it is bumbling its way around the postage system somewhere!

Ah well, I hope you all enjoyed the book and maybe one day it will surprise me and turn up on my doorstep, or I hope someone has found it and will love it and read it and pass it on.

Thanks all for taking part :)
