I picked up Fear having earlier read Panic, which I found refreshing. Fear tries very hard in a similar vein with an unusual premise for the story.
The back story takes a while to set the scene and for the characters to coalesce. Once they do however the story barrels along with a finely judged pace.
There are some well worked devices to allow further character development and further elucidation of the backstory. The backstory builds well and provides part of the denouement, crashing into the plot at the climax.
The story ends abruptly and with obviously much less thought than went into the book as a whole. Right at the climax, the author appears to run out the idea. A short lead out, happily ever after chapter, made the ending feel a little like coitus interruptus.
Slow start, quick ending but the large middle section is worth the effort.
