A woman sets out to Tibet after her husband, a Chinese doctor working for the military, goes missing. She ends up spending thirty years traveling with a group of Tibetans, learns the language and customs, but never ceases her search for her husband. After all this time she is neither of her home culture, or of her new home, but tries to make the best out of a very unusual set of circumstances.

The only critisism I have of the story is that everything comes together too well. It is really unlikely that all these things would have fallen together so nicely, but it was a beautiful story none-the-less.

Book bought at Atlantik in downtown Budapest.

An amazing story of one woman's extraordinary adventure. This story will stick with me for a long time, and I plan on recommending this book to all of my friends and family who are readers.

It was very sad, I was hoping for a happier ending, but overall I liked the book and it was a very quick read.

TITLE/AUTHOR: SKY BURIAL by Xinaran
RATING: 4/B
GENRE/PUB DATE/# OF PGS: Travel/Memoir/2004/164 pgs
TIME/PLACE: China & Tibet/1950's-1990's
FIRST LINES: I can't tell you how much I regret all the foolish, ignorant things I asked Shu Wen in that tea house in Suzhou.

COMMENTS: 04/14/08 rec via bookcrossing ring/ray. Based on a true story. Shu Wen and her husband, Kenju are doctors in China. It is the late 1950's and they are newly married when he travels to Tibet. He is reported dead, but there is little else said besides that and Shu Wen sets out on her own journey to Tibet. She ends up living w/ Yak Herders for 30 yrs before she returns to China.

This arrived a while ago, but because I've had so much uni work I've kept all the book shaped parcels in a pile in my room! Work (and uni) is all over now, so I can just read and read and read. This looks amazing, especially as I'm really interested in Tibet. Thanks for sharing!

Arrived today. Many thanks!

9.9.08 Already finished the book. Great read! Even though I have already read quite a lot of books regarding Tibet the insight from this particular point of view was very interesting.

Will be sent on to bibounde as soon as I have got the address.
15.9. bibounde wants to be left out. I'll try xeyra next.
2.10. finally got the message that xeyra wants to be left out as well. Will now try my luck with Gategypsy.

This teensy little book was such a welcome find in my mailbox! Thanks much to dschinny (and everyone else!) for passing this along. I do have two other books immediately ahead of this one, but it's so skinny... maybe I'll be able to get to it sooner rather than later! Thanks again. I'm really looking forward to this!
