'For 15-year-old Michael Berg, a schoolboy in post-war Germany, a chance meeting with Hanna, a woman 20 years older than he, leads to far more than he ever imagined. Before long they embark on an intense, clandestine love affair. Years later, as a law student observing a war crimes trial, Michael is shocked to realize Hanna is among the defendants. The woman he had loved so passionately is a criminal. Much about her behaviour during the trial makes no sense. But then suddenly, it does - Hanna is not only obliged to answer for a terrible crime, she is also desperately concealing an even deeper secret.'

"Leaps national boundaries and speaks straight to the heart... a moving, suggestive and ultimately hopeful work" New York Times.

I think that sums it up perfectly - an excellent read.

Have just finished reading this book. I have quite liked it. After having read lots of books about WWII a few years ago, I stopped doing so for quite a while and was a bit disappointed when I picked up this book and realised it had something to do with WWII (I signed up for the ring because it is one of the 1001 books). Nevertheless, I have liked it. Obviously, what happened in WWII is quite an important part of the story, but the book is very well written and the story is very compelling.

Thanks a lot to cat207 for sharing!! I now have kasoswife address so will post it to her tomorrow.

Released 15 yrs ago (4/28/2008 UTC) at To the next participant in Bookring/Bookray, -- By post or by hand/ in person -- Canada
