'These travelers were called pilgrims, and their symbol was the scallop shell.' -- Paulo Coelho

'The road of the Tradition is not for the chosen few. It is everyone's road.' -- J

Paulo Coelho was denied his new sword, he was deemed by his master J to be unfit to receive it.

He was told by J, that if he ever wished to see his sword again, he would have to travel the Road to Santiago, an ancient medieval route trod by millions of medieval pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Saint James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

At the end of their journey together, his guide Petrus told Paulo Coelho that it was customary for members of the Tradition, an ancient Catholic order of which they were both members, to give an account of the pilgrimage. It could be a painting, music, poetry. Petrus did a painting.

The Pilgrimage is an account by Paulo Coelho of his remarkable journey along the Road to Santiago.
