The Sportswriter

This is the first book in a trilogy and the story is told over the course of three days in the life of sportswriter Frank Bascombe. Recently divorced he reunites with his ex-wife(ironically referred to as X throughout the novel)for the anniversary of their son's death, travels to Detroit for both business, to interview a disabled football player and for a short holiday with his current girlfriend.
Overall I found this a very slow book with no plot and really just a reflective, ponderous narrative detailing the thoughts of a 38 year old man.
I have Independence Day and The Lay Of the Land completing this trilogy on my shelf but will have a break before heading back to revisit Frank and his musings on life.
