Vladimir Nabokov writes at least as brilliantly in English as he does in his original Russian. (In reviewing this book, the novel PALE FIRE published in 1962, TIME Magazine calls Nabokov "the greatest verbal prestidigitator of his time.") His creative use of language is stunning no matter what the story.

This story, PALE FIRE, is dense and charming and told in part through an epic poem that parallels the narrator's account and humorously distorted critique of that poem. It's a sophisticated "literary" novel, probably more suited to serious students of literature than to those who prefer fast-paced thrillers.

I took the book home to lvingly reinforce the binding with clear tape. I intend to take the book to the airport to be enjoyed by another book-lover.

Although the book looks interesting, I don't currently have the time or the inclination to read it.

BTW, I found the book (1/31/08 at 5:00pm) in the West Burnside Fred Meyer on an empty table in the little coffee shop near the deli area.
