Commander Adam Dalgliesh is already acquainted with the Dupayne Museum in Hampstead, and with its sinister murder room celebrationg notorious crimes committed in the interwar years, when he is called to investigate the killing of one of the trustees. He soon discovers that the victim was seeking to close the museum against the wishes of both staff and fellow trustees. Everyone, it seems, has something to gain from the crime. When it becomes clear that the killer is prepared to kill again, inspired by the real-life crimes from the murder room, Dalgliesh knows that to solve this case he has to get into the mind of a ruthless killer.

Pffff.... What a disappointment, the book was sooooo boring. The first 150 pages (!!) were reserved to introduce people and places before even the first murder. Oh my... I understand these type of introductions in lengthy books like Lord of the Rings and such, but for a normal crime story?? The murder investigations proceeded as slowly as the beginning part and the whole story just didn't get a grip on me at any point. The best part of the book was that it ended. (And even the end was just a losy one.) I hope the next reader gets more out of this book. :)

I possess one P D James, I guess most books by Amanda Cross (and some by = Carolyn Heilbrunn) in English and one translated (by my lady friend). Detective stories reveal for me social issues in local setting. I came across this Murder Room at my library yesterday, am soon halfway through it in order to return it back for other readers.

Through PD James, parallell with three diaries of Anaïs Nin. Contrary to what Black Devil finds boring, I read stories enjoying a closer view of the local settings. Normally I hardly read crime stories set up in Finland. Rather French, German (Ingrid Noll), Swedish (several). Sorry having mispelled Carolyn Heilbron (Amanda Cross) in my first message. I specially enjoyed sharp observations on differing ways of living, dressing, education, mixing and getting close. Having spent the summer 1959 at the outskirts of Hampstead Heath and seen some countryside as well I felt like at home (and for some days observed what MIGHT happen wherever I went).
