Ernest J. Gaines is able to convey the rich sense of place, a deep understanding of the human psyche, and compassion for a people and their struggle in all of his novels and A Lesson Before Dying is no exception.

The story takes place in a small Cajun community in the late 1940's. It is a story of a young black man, Jefferson, who although innocent, is the only survivor and found guilty of murder in a liquor store shootout in which three men are killed.

Jefferson is sentenced to death and with only a matter of weeks until his death sentence, his aunt and godmother are determined that Jefferson will get a crash course in being proud, fearless, and having the courage to face his last moments on this earth as a man.

His aunt and godmother choose his cousin, Grant Wiggins, who left his hometown for the university and recently returned to the plantation school to teach as the most likely candidate. It is a long haul, but in the end the two men forge a bond that you won't forget.
