Synopsis from Amazon:-
Crow Lake is that rare find, a first novel so quietly assured, so compelling, and with an emotional charge so perfectly controlled, that you sense at once that his is the real thing - a literary experience to relish, a book to lose yourself in, and a name to watch. Here is a gorgeous, slowburning story of families growing up and tearing each other apart in rural Northern Ontario, where tragedy and hardship are mirrored in the landscape. Centerstage are the Morrisons whose tragedy is insidious and divisive. Orphaned young, Kate Morrison was her older brother Matt's protege, her curious fascination for pondlife fed by his passionate interest in the natural world. Now a zoologist, she can identify organisms under a microscope, but seems blind to the tragedy of her own emotional life. She thinks she's outgrown her family, who were once her entire world - but she can't seem to outgrow her childhood or lighten the weight of their mutual past.'

Made a bit of a mess of numbering this and another book so this is by way of a rectification to get the right books, with the right numbers, in the right locations!

Picked this up.. because I don't know. It might be good. I really don't need anymore books to read at the moment but I always feel bad seeing those stacks of books on the table at the pub that no one wants to read!

Well, I read it and it was ok I suppose... although definately not a book for everyone. It is well-written, I will give her that, but it's a bit of one of these emotional family dramas - not exactly fast-paced shall we say. I had a bit of trouble with it. I got so far through and then left it a couple of weeks before I could be bothered to finish it.

The narrator, Kate, is looking back on her childhood whilst at the same time showing how this has all effected her adult life. The adult Kate is a bit dull and whining, and the less of her, the better. Most of the book focuses on her childhood experiences, though, which is better. And the book doesn't go overly dramatic, or try to put a shocking spin that no one expected right at the end, so huray for Mary Lawson on that point!

RELEASE NOTES:

Will post this to the Japan Bookcrossing Book Fair for May 2008. It would be so nice for someone in Japan to pick up this book and journal it! I was in Japan for 5 weeks last year and whilst I did wild release, I never heard anything more =(

Update 26/05/08 I know this has arrived. About a week ago the other book that went in the same package as this one was released in by Japan by someone other than the Japan BC that I sent the parcel to. Disappointing that there's been no quick message to say it arrived ok.
