Freda and Brenda, two eccentric and damaged working-class women in 1970s London, organise - against Brenda's better judgement - a day out in the country for the Italian workers at the factory in which they work. What begins as a typically bad British day trip, however, turns into a surreal nightmare of unexplained death, corpse disposal, slapstick comedy and unrequited love. ..

Not one of Bainbridge's faster moving books, at first, but the early and bizarre adventures of the two protagonists are necessary to explain the choices and destiny of the surviving one later on. Once I'd hacked through the dingy 70's start, it picked up nicely. A good intro to this author's realistic but at the same time dark and chilling world.
