Son Of A Witch: A Novel

I've read a lot of terrible books, but this one possibly wins the distinction of being the worst book that I have ever read. It was awful.
An explanation....I liked Wicked and I have read all of Maguire's other books. Every time a new Maguire book came out, I read it and they seemed to progressively go downhill. I didn't expect Son of s Witch to be very good, but I wanted to give it a chance.
The only reason that this book was possibly written, is due to the success of the stage musical of Wicked. It is the only possible reason. This book served no real purpose and did not move the story forward in a meaningful way. Off the subject, I didn't care for the musical version of Wicked. It was a less than ideal adaptation and lackluster as far as musicals go. I don't understand why it has been so popular.
Something that really irritated me about this book was the over abundance of fantasy terms. Yes, I know that it's a fantasy book, but I couldn't help but feel that Maguire thought that he was being super clever with word play and naming things. It came across as pretentious and annoying. The writing was just bad. The characters were ridiculous and most of plot didn't have a point. A terrible, terrible book.
Sending this to "AZquark" as a RABCK. Enjoy! Sent media mail on 2/13/08.

Arrived in the Saturday mail. Thank you karenlea.
It will be very interesting to see if I agree with your assessment of the book.
I also liked "Wicked" and have been wanting to read "Son of a Witch" since reading "Wicked".

While I won't rate this as harshly as Karenlea did, I do agree with a lot of what she had to say.
I had also read and enjoyed "Wicked" and was very much looking forward to this story. While it was enjoyable, it somehow lacked the spark that made "Wicked" so good. Somehow this book just seemed to grind on to it's conclusion without ever engrossing me the way "Wicked" did. Perhaps conclusion is not the appropriate word to use here. It left several dangling story threads. I assume that the author is planning at least one more novel in this series.

Mailed this book to T02S03B11D20 who was a winner in my RABCK drawing.
Just received this in the mail yesterday, thanks so much. I will be interested in reading it, this is an unusal series.
I have never gotten around to reading this book, so it is certainly time to move it on! Too bad, because I liked Wicked, but somehow never felt in the mood for this one.
A wish list tag, enjoy!
Thank you for tagging me with and sending this book! 😃📖
