Synopsis
Iris Murdoch's first novel is set in a part of London where struggling writers rub shoulders with successful bookies, and film starlets with frantic philosophers. Its hero, Jake Donaghue, is a drifting clever, likeable young man, who makes a living out of translation work and sponging off his friends. A meeting with Anna, an old flame, leads him into a series of fantastic adventures. Jake is captivated by a majestic philosopher, Hugo Belfounder, whose profound and inconclusive reflections give the book its title under the net of language.
LyzzyBee, Heaven-Ali & I are starting 'A Murdoch a Month' challenge & this is the first of Iris Murdoch's novels.

And we're off!! Liz, Ali, Gill & I have undertaken a challenge to read all of Iris Murdoch's novels - A Murdoch a Month - which will take us until Feb 2010.
After a rather slow start I really enjoyed this. There were some laugh out loud moments, including an eavesdropping episode on a fire escape & a dog napping. It was a much lighter read than I was expecting after reading The Sea, the Sea last year.
