Wow! I am very impressed by this book. It is so thoroughly researched and presented in a well-thought out and interesting way. Plus he hasn´t demonised any particular party in the story and doesn´t just rant about everything that´s wrong with the system, but also suggests ways of making things better.

None of this really shocked me in that I´ve always understood that these big international fast food corporations are more about cashing in rather than being concerned about their workers, the food quality etc, but I hadn´t really appreciated to what extent this had/still is going on. Everybody knows workers are paid appaulling wages and the food isn´t fantastic. It just cashes in on the desperation of people - teenagers who can´t get jobs elsewhere, immigrints who are desperate etc.

So I´m not naive to the world and its ways, but I still get so mad when I read about these big executives, who know what´s going on but blatently couldn´t give a toss, and see the workers down the bottom of the scale as disposable machines. All that matters is increasing profits. Ugh. It´s quite depressing in a way. Thousands of years of human evolution, discovery and developement and this is where we got to? Exploiting the majority of workers, feeding our customers crap all in the name of making money...

This corporate mentality of enforcing ways of thinking and attitudes on workers is really depressing. Some of the "case studies" of particular people were so sad - these workers maimed and mutilated in the slaughterhouses; and then whilst in the hospital being forced to sign away their rights to the meat companies so that the company doesnt get in trouble. One of the saddest though, was the ranch man, Hank, who ended up committing suicide under all the pressures.

So has this actually made anyone want to boycott MacDonalds, Burger King etc? I don´t really eat at those places because I don´t eat meat; but I also find them a bit mass produced, plastic fantastic and almost tacky. It´s just grim that the same thing should be found all over the world. After reading this book, I will probably avoid these kinds of places even more than I usually do!

I do like the fact that he remains positive, and does think that changes can be made to make it all better. Just feel the need to quote the very end of the book now...

"This new century may bring an impatience with conformity, a refusal to be kept in the dark, less greed, more compassion, less speed, more common sense, a sense of humor about brand essences and loyalties, a view of food as more than just fuel. Things don´t have to be the way they are. Despite all evidence to the contrary, I remain optimistic."

I have pmed Silver-Greece for their address and will get this posted onwards as soon as I can.
