The Apple in the Dark

This is a Book-of-the-month club edition and didn't have an ISBD, so I stole one from amazon. My mom stopped reading it because, she said, there is "too much description and not enough story."
I think it is tranlated from Portuguese. The New York Times Book Review said, "Clarice Lispector is the premier Latin American woman prose writer of this century."
Nice looking trade paperback.

It was like a miracle -- a gift from the universe. I was at Whole Foods, and decided to take the stairs instead of use the elevator (both saving energy and getting a little exercise!). I found the book in the stairwell, with a little sticker on it: "Free Book: 'a random act of literature' bookcrossing.org." I was so thrilled I told about 5 strangers about it once I started shopping in Whole Foods.
And isn't the universe so magical -- it happens to be a book by a Brazilian author. One of my favorite authors of all time is Brazilian (Jorge Amado) and I'm always seeking literature by other Brazilian authors. This was a special, unforgettable gift for the holidays, and I will pass it on -- plus, some other books I will contribute to this great global community of readers.

I tried -- I really tried! I wonder if I would have better enjoyed this book had I been able to read it in its original language, Portuguese. But I found it very slow and difficult to get into, and couldn't get past the fifth chapter. The author, Clarice Lispector, goes into great detail describing every aspect of the main character's experience, which is intriguing on one hand, but also slooooooows down the pace of the story, so much so that I couldn't finish it. Oh well, I hope someone else enjoys it, because she is one of Brazil's most famous novelists! Ironically, one of my favorite authors is Jorge Amado, another very famous Brazilian author.
