First published in Greek as Η δασκάλα με τα χρυσά μάτια, 1954.
Translated by Philip Sherrard, 1964.
This edition, Efstathiadis Group, 2003 (Athens, Greece). ISBN 960 226 088 2.

"Leonis Drivas returns from the war. The springs of feeling have so dried in him that even the news of his mother's death with which his younger sister greets his homecoming cannot draw his tears. Like many before him, he sets himself to pick up the quiet threads of his life and to exorcise the memories through his painting. First, however, he has a duty to perform. His friend Varnas, who died a death of putrefying horror beside him in the military hospital, has entrusted him with a wallet to return to his widow. Sappho Vranas, the schoolmistress with the golden eyes, is not the simple peasant girl he expected to find."

What an interesting book. The author writes in the old fashioned style, of course as the book was first published in 1954. It was very descriptive and interesting.

Now I know that I need to come to the Greek islands to experience the place for myself.

Unfortunately, this book didn't do a lot for me - I just couldn't get into the writer's style, and the plot didn't really engage me. I agree with Marcie on one point though - the descriptions of the Greek Islands make me want to visit Greece!
