Delightful account by Chuck Panozzo, the bassist in Styx, about being a nice Italian boy who happens to be gay.

"I started hanging out at a specific Old Town bar that was known as a leather-and-Levi's kind of place. You get the picture—jeans, leather vests, uniforms, and combat boots. Think the Village People without the Indian. The first time that I went there, I was scared to death. I knew I was attracted physically to the men and the way that they dressed, but I wasn't sure exactly what they were into. A huge bear of a man in leather pants and a cop hat can be a bit intimidating to a newbie. But as I worked my way into the crowd and began to hear snippets of conversations, I realized, "These guys are talking about recipes!"

About Mr. Roboto and the Kilroy Was Here concept album: "As Tommy put it, 'I just couldn't sit down and write songs about robots.'"

On being an unemployed rock star: "I tried to fill my life with distractions. Whatever interested me, I would do. I became the king of adult education. I started self-study groups. I learned jazz bass. I am even a proud graduate of the American Flower Academy. In fact, I was so good at flower arranging, the females in the class hated me. I told them, 'I'm an art teacher. Learn the color wheel and your arrangements might look this good too.'"

About being out and proud: "I hope that every young gay person, or anyone who feels that they do not belong in their world, can learn from my experience. There are places where you will be welcomed and people there who will accept you for exactly who you are. Seek them out. It can make all the difference in your life."
